Frequently Asked Questions
Can I apply for Chevening if I have only completed a 3-year bachelor’s degree from a Nepali university like Tribhuvan or Pokhara University?
Yes. Chevening accepts applicants who hold a 3-year bachelor’s degree from Nepali universities. However, you must ensure that the UK universities and courses you select also recognise and accept a 3-year undergraduate degree as meeting their entry requirements.
Does the scholarship cover all expenses, including travel and living costs in the UK?
Yes. The Chevening Scholarship is a fully funded award that covers key costs associated with studying in the UK. This includes payment of tuition fees, economy return travel from your country of residence, visa application costs, arrival and departure allowances, a travel top-up allowance, and a contribution (up to £75) for TB testing where required.
Scholars also receive a monthly living allowance (stipend) to help cover accommodation and day-to-day expenses. The stipend amount varies depending on whether you study in London or outside London and may be reviewed annually.
Do I need job experience to apply for a Chevening scholarship?
Yes. Applicants must have at least 2,800 hours of work experience after completing their undergraduate degree. This is roughly equivalent to about two years of full-time work, although the required hours can be accumulated over a longer period through different types of eligible experience.
Is there any eligibility criteria to be a member of CAAN?
To become a member of CAAN, you must be a Chevening Scholar or Fellow who has completed the programme. In addition, as per organisational provisions and relevant Nepali laws, applicants should be Nepali nationals aged 18 or above, apply for membership by completing the prescribed application process, and pay the nominal membership fee set by the association.
Is an English language proficiency test (like IELTS or TOEFL) mandatory for Nepali applicants, or can I get a waiver based on my medium of instruction?
Chevening removed its standalone English language requirement in 2020. However, applicants must still meet the English language and all other admission requirements set by their chosen UK universities. You must also secure an unconditional offer from at least one of your three selected courses by the specified deadline.
What is the benefit of being a member at CAAN? Is there any eligibility criteria?
In addition to access to networking opportunities, alumni events, policy dialogues, mentoring, and professional development programmes, CAAN membership also provides opportunities to contribute to alumni initiatives, take on leadership roles within the association, participate in AGMs and decision-making platforms, and help strengthen UK–Nepal relations through collective alumni engagement.
What does CAAN do?
The Chevening Alumni Association of Nepal (CAAN) connects and mobilises Chevening alumni in Nepal to strengthen professional networking, leadership, knowledge exchange, and public engagement. Founded in 2008 and registered as an NGO in Kathmandu, the association works to foster collaboration among alumni and like-minded organisations and leverage this network for Nepal’s development.
CAAN organises events, discussions, outreach activities, and collaborative initiatives aligned with Chevening values. It also supports prospective applicants through information sessions and mentoring, promotes Chevening opportunities in Nepal, and represents the alumni community in various Nepal–UK bilateral platforms.
